GPS track failure

Posted by 地図人 on 27 May 2010 in English.

Today I tried to use my GPS to map a new street. I'm using a very old Magellan Meridian Gold GPS. It has problems holding 3D mode. Walking down a straight road, a swerving track is created. The GPS is changing between 2D and 3D mode so accuracy is poor. Maybe the tall buildings along the street are occluding the satellites. Or maybe the problem is that I am moving when I turn on the GPS. Tomorrow I will turn on the GPS before I leave. I hope it can get more than 4 satellites.

GPS receivers prior to the SIRF-III generation are very bad in street canyons and forests. Nervertheless you should wait for a fix bevor starting to move with any generation of receivers.

Well, I had the same problem with a new GPS. I wanted to track a train route from Izegem to Kortrijk (Belguim) but the train left before my gps got a fix. So I didn't receive a fix for the complete train route and I had to try it again.
