Field Mapping Along Java’s West Coast : Notes on Tools, Workflows, and Friction

How do you deal with the conflicting mouse bindings of iD and JOSM? Sort of like left and right hand drive cars, with no way to reassign the buttons.

Just curious if any kings ever got retired from the DWG?

Reflecting on my 2025 Contributions to Regina's OSM

Perhaps one day make house addressing grid maps of Regina.

Tagging For The Renderer

I had to get this underpass off of the roof of city hall before the mayor saw it https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/5050 .

Mapping Indianola, Iowa 2

Great job, but what about the address grids. Alas, OSM currently has no way to map them…

A more inclusive mapping party setup, for same-day imagery collection and mapathons.

Perhaps mention what area those pictures are of.

You thought OpenStreetMap data uses the WGS84 datum? No it doesn't!

International boundary turning points in rivers are a case of important points that belong on the map, but with no physical representation, only coordinates… “so those coordinates better be good”…

GitHub's backward blocking causes conflict aggravation

How do you know there are more blocking me than blocking you?

But that’s beside the point.

Don’t you think there is maybe something wrong with being able to turn off other people’s notifications?

Isn’t there any security problems with that model?

If you had a choice, would you choose to 1) only turn off notifications to you of other people’s boring activities?

Or, 2) turn off their notifications of your activities, so you could do things behind their back, even though the things you do are certainly good, and they are certainly a bad person, so has no right to know.

And OK, 1) and 2) are linked to the same function, so it is hard to do 1) without also doing 2), so that makes it morally OK?

Parking_space micromapping JOSM method overview

I assume it would be quite easy to simply move all the parking spaces elements.

Perhaps be prepared for disasters by testing what kind of elements would be easy to move en masse. (Any at all?)

Glad that you are using air photos and not GPS in parking lots. I’m just worried if one day you will find your air photos were a meter or two off…

OSM becoming a patchwork of different referencing systems

Today I illegally tried my country’s government map as a background, and found all my years of local mapping was skewed… proven by GPS traces (which match the government map) too. Well that’s what happens after a constant diet of your average satellite images, and a government that doesn’t allow one to use the local imagery or maps as reference.

That is the whole point of blocking people. Yes. But please read further.

The pass history of OpenStreetMap Taiwan: the big blank area of Huko, Hsinhong, Kuanin

Alas the only layer with “perfect” WGS84 alignment is the government layer, and it is limited to zoom level 15. So the rest of the editing is done with a patchwork of different alignments: osm.org/user/jidanni/diary/392287 .

Apparently I got over it within minutes https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/issues/1333#issuecomment-255526907 but nobody knew, as they already had blocked me.

Ah, but at least FB and IG don’t let me keep on commenting on the blockee’s issues, with the blockee anesthetized so he is not aware of it too.
